Water Gardens

Water gardens can be a beautiful part of a landscape, whether in an urban, suburban or rural environment.  The chosen site may dictate certain constraints, but most sites offer a wide variety of options.  Water features can transform a landscape with exceptional beauty and sound.  They offer the opportunity to enjoy new and beautiful plants.

Site selection is very important in terms of the amount of sunlight, protection from surface water and topography.

Construction can be accomplished with a variety of materials.  Here Pennsylvania River Rock are being used to form a retaining wall.

A liner padding is necessary to protect the rubber liner from punctures.  Here a combination of carpet padding and sand do the trick.

A flexible Liner is used here because of the size of the pond.  Smaller ponds can be constructed with a rigid liner.

Plant selection offers a wide variety of plants that both decorate and enhance water quality.

Many pond owners add yard art to enhance the pond and help produce a theme.

Fish selection is very important in terms of stocking rate.  Don't over stock the pond.
If you include fish, be sure to provide proper filtration and check for water quality.

A finished pond.  It only needed a patio.

Enjoyable in any part of the year.
A more thorough discussion of building water gardens can be found at The Water Garden News.  General advice can be obtained from the North Carolina Koi and Water Garden Society.  Many useful books are available on the subject.

Also, be safety conscious - always consult local zoning ordnances and laws that govern ponds in your area as part of your design process.
